Autumn Programme for September – December 2010

Wednesday 22nd September at 7pm in the Swedenborg Hall

David and Sue Richardson will speak on “Kiymesheks and Qarshıns: Two Insights into Qaraqalpaq Textile Culture”

They will look seriously at two items, one item of costume and one pile weave. This will give a nice introduction to the material culture of Karakalpakstan, the Central Asian Province between Kazakstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which includes Khiva and the ecological disaster of the Aral Sea. (They have decided to use the dotless "i", and the Qaraqalpaq spelling instead of the Russian Karakalpak, as there is no Q in Russian). David and Sue are private researchers who have been specialising in the Qaraqalpaqs and other peoples of the Lower Amu Darya for the past 14 years. They are are currently writing an illustrated book on the history and culture of the Qaraqalpaqs.
