A talk by Dr Maria João Ferreira
This talk will focus on the textile trade between Asia and Portugal in the early modern period. It will analyse the main circuits and further examine the nature of Asian textile imports in Portugal, assessing their impact on consumption patterns and shifts in taste.
In 2015 an article by her on Portuguese Trade, Consumption and Taste, 1500-1700 was published in Textile History. Her PhD research focused on the same time frame, analysing the presence and use of Chinese textiles as decorative options in Portuguese sacred celebratory events.
Maria João Ferreira is currently a researcher at CHAM at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon, and the author of several studies and publications in the field of Asian and European textile production and consumption in Portugal during the early modern period
