April 17th 2024: Lecture by Coryn Greatorex-Bell at the University Women's Club 18.00 for 18.30

'A glimpse at Guatemalan dress 1820-2020.'

Coryn Greatorex-Bell first visited Guatemala as an undergraduate reading French and Spanish at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1977 Coryn received a Leverhulme Trust Overseas Studentship to return to Guatemala to study Guatemalan textiles at the Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena, in Guatemala City, living in nearby Antigua for nearly two years. Coryn has exhibited her own extensive collection of Guatemalan textiles and collection of photographs and has given numerous talks at museums and colleges. She recently visited Guatemala to give presentations on the book Reflections of Guatemala, written with colleague Christopher H. Lutz, a colonial historian, who has published widely on Guatemala and co-founded CIRMA, a library and archive based in Antigua Guatemala.  Reflections of Guatemala includes previously unpublished images and archival documents, about nineteenth century Guatemalan life and dress about which very little had previously been known.
