Suzanis: A New Light on an Old Story

Despite being created mostly in the 19th century, a well documented period for most of the world, surprisingly little is known about the Central Asian suzani. The known facts, rather than the oft-repeated suppositions, are meagre but new material emerging on the historical and international cultural and trading background may at least add a few more pieces to the puzzle.

After 55 years in the art trade, and handling and writing about suzanis for nearly 50, Penny Oakley is currently working on a book about suzanis and doing research into the history and commerce of their Central Asian homeland in an attempt to fill in more details of their creation. .
